The context: This is not from a show, it's from my life. I had just moved away from LA after 19 years there. I was leaving my two best friends in the world, Heidi and Louise, whose wedding I had recently officiated, and who I had known for virtually my whole adult life. I wanted to process my feelings about them through a song.
A little about the creation of the song: I was sad when I wrote the song, but I didn't want the song to be a complete downer. I was trying to put it into perspective. That's where the title came from. A hundred years from now, none of my sad feelings will matter. But that was even more of a downer! But then I thought about all the ups and downs I had experienced with my two friends, and I realized that actually, a hundred years from now, our friendship will indeed matter. And we'll probably be hooked up to brain-transporting robots and doing tequila shots together on Jupiter. This is probably the most folk-pop song I've written. That's a genre that I like to listen to, but I don't usually write in. But I'm glad I did.

A Hundred Years from Now...
Music & Lyrics by David Rackoff YOU’VE GOT MY NEW ADDRESS, AND HERE’S YOUR KEY BACK AND YOUR SHOES. AND THANKS FOR ALL THE COOKIES FOR THE PLANE. I’LL EMAIL IF I NEED TO LET YOU KNOW OF ANY NEWS. I GUESS I SHOULD GET GONE BEFORE THE RAIN. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT’S EIGHTEEN YEARS, IT ALL WENT BY SO FAST. WE MADE A LOT OF MEM’RIES AND MISTAKES. THE FUTURE IS THE FUTURE AND THE PAST IS IN THE PAST. IT SHOULDN’T HAVE TO END, BUT THEM’S THE BREAKS. A HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW NO TELLING WHAT THE FUTURE SENDS. A HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW NO ONE WILL KNOW WE ONCE WERE FRIENDS. THE OCEAN WILL BE HIGHER. THE DESERT WILL BE DRYER. THE SUMMERS WILL BE HOTTER. THE GLACIERS WILL BE WATER. AND NO ONE KNOWS THE WAY OUR STORY ENDS. LET’S ONCE A YEAR GO TRAV’LLING TO A PLACE WE’VE NEVER GONE, AND BUY UP EV’RY SOUVENIR THEY SELL. WE’LL SNEAK UP TO THE ROOF WHERE WE’LL DRINK WINE UNTIL THE DAWN. AND THEN I GUESS WE’LL WISH EACH OTHER WELL. BUT ONCE A YEAR’S TOO MUCH; I’M WRITING SONGS, YOU’VE GOT YOUR KID. THE KID, AND NOT TO MENTION YOUR CAREER. AT LEAST WE HAVE THE PICTURES OF THE CRAZY STUFF WE DID. SO MAYBE TRY FOR EV’RY OTHER OTHER YEAR. A HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW WE WON’T BE FEELING ANY HURT. A HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW I STILL WON’T GIVE YOU BACK THAT SHIRT. OUR BAR WILL BE A STREET THEN. THIS PARK WILL BE CONCRETE THEN. OUR HIST’RY WILL BE HIST’RY. ALL ELSE REMAINS A MYST’RY. OUR SECRETS WILL BE BURIED IN THE DIRT. I FEEL THIS LITTLE HOLLOW OPEN UP INSIDE MY CHEST. I HAVE TO GO AND PACK, HOW ‘BOUT A KISS? AND IF WE NEVER MEET AGAIN, YOU’VE CHANGED ME FOR THE BEST. AW, FUCK IT MAN, I SWEAR I PROMISE THIS!: A HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW WE’LL HAVE A HOLIDAY ON MARS! A HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW WE’LL ALL ARRIVE IN FLYING CARS! A HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW WE’LL JUST BE HEADS INSIDE OF JARS! YOU'LL SAY WHAT YOU'VE BEEN DOING. THE DREAMS WE’RE STILL PURSUING. YOUR GRAND-KIDS WILL BE THERE, TOO. THEY'LL DANCE ABOVE THE AIR, TOO. WE’LL SING BENEATH A SKY OF SHOOTING STARS! AND THEN WE’LL RIDE HOME IN A SILVERY BALLOON. BUT FIRST WE’LL STOP FOR COFFEE ON THE MOON. A HUNDRED YEARS IS NOT SO LONG... I’LL SEE YOU SOON. |
